Shanny Pilcher received "Best of State" Early Childhood Educator for 2015.
Shanny Pilcher has been a Dancing Moose early childhood teacher for the past seven years. She has a Bachelor of Science in Family consumer science with a focus on early childhood education. She is currently working on a Masters degree in Montessori education, which has been instrumental in providing sound practices that correlate with core educational standards for early childhood.
She connects personally with each parent and often spends multiple hours weekly to help parents understand how to extend educational and social development of their children from the classroom to home. She maintains an open-door policy that welcomes parent to be involved and participate with or observe their child at any point. During the last five years, every one of Ms. Shanny’s 5-year-olds have graduated from her class with the ability to read CVC words, and each child had a concrete understanding of place value and static addition. This progress occurred even for children who could only attend school for 2-days per week.
Ms. Shanny sends out weekly emails that detail science experiments and lessons that take place each week. She includes classroom pictures and take home notes to help parents understand her teaching methods. Her monthly calendars provide ample opportunities for parents to ask questions and become involved in the lessons that Ms. Shanny plans. Ms. Shanny invites parents to share any special knowledge of the topics the class is discussing. Some of these topics have included science experiments, food tasting from a variety of cultures, occupation studies, and even astronomy nights.
Ms. Shanny has actively reached out to the community in a variety of ways. She helps organize and carry out the annual fund raiser for the Dancing Moose Community Garden. Her children identify a theme and build a scarecrow to celebrate the festival. She also assists in organizing and participating in the 1-K spring festival that brings together all of the Dancing Moose family and community members in a half-day event of exercise and healthy lifestyles.
"My job is to love my children and do all that I can to raise them to be amazing adults. But I recognize that I can't do that all on my own. I am so blessed to have Mrs Shanny in my child's life because she picks up where I as a parent fall short. She teaches my children to LOVE learning, she teaches them How to learn, She teaches them how to find the answers, She teaches them that they are special, intelligent and capable. These things make Mrs Shanny more then a teacher. It makes her a god sent to me. and a "Best Friend" to my children." - Sara M.
