Montessori education focuses on the whole child, which includes intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development. Children learn through intrinsic motivation to discover and pursue new ideas. They pace themselves and make choices within an environment that is specially prepared to allow children to avail themselves to a variety of learning experiences. Students learn habits of initiative, concentration, and persistence. Each Montessori classroom is a community that fosters cooperation, consideration, order, and self motivation.
Learning Materials Learning materials are accessible to children so that they can work with them as long as the material holds interest and intrigue. Children do not compete with other children to accomplish tasks faster or better; instead, they work to their personal satisfaction, which might be a few minutes or several hours that are spread over days. They work with materials at increasing levels of sophistication as their knowledge and interest determines. Areas of learning include Practical Life, Sensorial Development, Language Arts, Science, Mathematics, Geography, Nature, Music, and Art Enrichment.
